The past, present and future of a coalmine area in Limburg.
The tour bus will take participants to Brussels airport by 13.30 (flight departures from 15.00 on).
The guide meets you at C-mine Genk, a former coalmine where you can find recently implemented projects at the site. You will be informed about the history of the coalmines and how mining areas in Limburg are exploited. At the mining site of Waterschei you will enter a small museum to experience the life and work in a coalmine. During the guided tour you will discover the city quarters near to the former coalmines, an architecture which is inspired on the English garden cities. The garden cities create a local atmosphere with lots of space, nature and typical houses of mineworkers and engineers. These quarters involve an important social aspect of the region because of their representation of an interesting history of social life and migration. The guide also takes you to a mosque and visits a cathedral built by the mine company.
